Established in 2008, Gerilya is an artist collective founded by Jano, Kube, and Zap, alumni of the University of the Philippines' College of Fine Arts. The group engages in diverse artistic activities, including comics, street art, graffiti animation, fine art exhibitions, and commissioned illustrations. Rooted in Philippine culture and history, Gerilya's work explores socio-political issues and national identity, inspired by the richness of Philippine popular and mass culture.
Featured Artist: Whang Od
Whang-Od, also known as Maria Oggay, is a legendary Filipino tattoo artist from the remote village of Buscalan in the Kalinga province. Born in 1917, she is celebrated as the last traditional Kalinga tattooist (mambabatok). Using a centuries-old technique with a thorn, ink, and bamboo stick, Whang-Od creates intricate, meaningful tattoos that tell stories of heritage and bravery. Her artistry has gained international recognition, symbolizing the preservation of indigenous culture and the timeless beauty of traditional tattoos. Whang-Od continues to inspire and pass on her knowledge to younger generations, ensuring the survival of this ancient art form.
